Register, 13 July 1876
The Geltwood, barque, 1,056 tons, which left Liverpool for Melbourne March 23 with a cargo of tobacco, beer, salt, drapery, etc., valued at £18,410, has been wrecked off Rivoli Bay, and it is believed all hands perished. Two men, named Spehr and Barrein, have been arrested, charged with stealing some of the cargo. Barrein was fined £10, and the charge against Spehr has been adjourned for further evidence. A plant of £760 worth of tobacco has been found. The wreck, with her gear, boats, stores, and cargo, was sold by auction, at Melbourne, for £825, July 11.

Portland Guardian, 18 July 1876
THE GELTWOOD. By telegram received from Adelaide on Friday last, The Argus tells us that by the captain of a vessel lately arrived in Port Adelaide, which left Liverpool very nearly the sametime as the Geltwood, the following details have been obtained about those who were on board the ill-fated ship. She was, as supposed, commanded by Captain Harrington, who was accompanied by his wife. This fact accounts fully for the articles of female attire found. Captain Harrington was part owner of the vessel, and intended to retire from seafaring life at the conclusion of the voyage which has had so sad an ending. The name of the chief officer was Brocklebank, that of the second mate was unknown. The crew consisted of a boat swain named Ellwood; a man of the name of Williamson, who acted as carpenter the cook, steward, 12 able seamen, and six boys. There was one passenger on the ship, a young married man, who was coming to the colony for the benefit of his health. He was the son of a gentleman practising as an architect in Carlisle, name unknown. From this statement of the number on board, it would seem that at least 27 souls perished on that fatal night. Captain Warren of the steamer Amphibious reports that on passing Rivoli Bay on the 15th of June last he saw what he believed was the Geltwood standing in near the shore, but thought she was ancehored safely. Captain Warren was compelled to seek shelter in Port McDonnell, and was there asked if he had seen bluelights, and replied in the negative.
WRECKERS-The wreckers at Rivoll Bay seem to have carried off a great deal of the most valuable portions of the cargo of the Geltwood, but the efforts of the South Australian police to recover the property are likely to be rewarded, with considerable success. The Register states that on Sunday last two men, named Louis Spehr and Frederick Barrien, were arrested for stealing some of the cargo. Spehr had £50 worth of tobacco on a packhorse, which he was leading at the time of his arrest. In addition to this, a a plant of £700 worth of tobacco has been discovered. Barrein is supposed to have been carting goods away for the last fort night. On his premises being searched, a farrier's box, a wheelbarrow, and a woman's wool dress saturated with sea water were found outside the house. In the stable there were four pairs of hose, one mat, and two pairs of boots, all saturated with sea water and sand Barrien denied all knowledge of them. He said that as he was looking for his horse he found the articles which he was accused of stealing, and had taken them, intending to give them up to the owner. He was fined £10, or in default two months' imprisonmenct. Spehr, who is said to be a man of considerable property, has been committed for trial. The police are still busy searching for bodies, but none have as yet been discovered. It is a very suspicious circumstance that though several seamen's boxes have been found, no lids or clothes have been dis covered. Several lots of goods which have been buried have however, been brought to light, and other arrests hare been made four or five miles from the wreck. The Border Watch gives the following particulars concerning the posi tion of the Geltwood :-" The scene of the wreck is bleak and forbidding. There is a considerable current inshore, and the waves break upon the beach with great fury even in fine weather. The beach is sandy, but where the vessel lies there is believed to be a bed of sunken rocks, over which the rollers come in in such a manner as to forbid any hope that a boat, if launched, could live in them. The strongest swimmer would have equally little chance."

PACKAGES FROM THE GELTWOOD. Millicent. October 23.
Troopers Shiels, G. P. Morris, and Mack arrested F. Barrein this morning, and found on his premises about a ton weight of miscellaneous cargo from the wreck of the Geltwood, consisting of calicoes, cloth, prints, stockings, spoons, tobacco, brushware, and various other articles. The goods were found in a pit about 12 feet deep in a cowshed on Barrein's premises, as were also a sailor's chest full of sundries and a sailor's bag containing a kit. Great excitement prevails, and further arrests are looked for. The goods and prisoner will be taken to Mount Gambier tomorrow.

THE GELTWOOD PLUNDERERS. The Millicent correspondent of the Border Watch, under date October 24, writes as follows: ' The police have made a large haul of concealed cargo from the Geltwood on the premises of F. Barrein, the same person who was a short time back brought before Mr. Glen, S.M., and fined £10 for having goods concealed in his stable. Not resting satisfied with the former result, Troopers Shiels, G. P. Morris, and Special-constable Mack determined to make a close and more systematic search. They proceeded at daybreak yesterday to Barrien's farm, which is about a mile from Millicent, and went to work. For some time nothing was discovered, and they were about to return disappointed when Shiels thought he would make an inspection of the cowshed floor. He probed with a thin iron bar, and striking a piece of wood called to Mack, who drove his crowbar right through what afterwards proved to be a sliding door from a hatchway. They then speedily had their shovels at work, and discovered a pit or trench crammed full of all sorts of merchandise. Barrien was arrested, and a spring-cart being obtained two loads were at once taken to the Police Station. The goods consisted of china ornaments, cases of tobacco, tobacco out of the cases similar to that found with Spehr, brushware, a large roll of splendid blue cloth similar to what ladies' riding habits are made from, some 30 pieces of fine linen, a large quantity of hosiery, spoons, pencils, a sailor's chest chock full of all sorts of articles, and a sailor's bag containing a sailor's kit. Taking it altogether there is about a ton in weight. There is not the slightest doubt that a very systematic robbery had taken place, and perhaps a clue will be found to show who, for the sake of plunder, kept back the information for the authorities and loaded them selves with the ill-gotten spoils. The police engaged deserved great credit for their exertion, which, for the sake of stimulating to further efforts, it is hoped the proper authorities will not lose sight of. The place is full of all sorts of wild rumour, but so far no more arrests have taken place.' Under date October 25 he says: 'Since writing the above the police have made another capture. Trooper H. A. Dowdy arrested late last evening at the camp at Nookwin, where there is a party of bark-strippers, John Barrien, eldest son of F. Barrien, on the charge of participating in the robbery from the Geltwood. The conviction of Spehr has evidently had good effect.' Under date October 28 he writes.

MOUNT GAMBIER CIRCUIT COURTS.
THE GELTWOOD WRECKING CASES.
[By Electric Telegraph.]
Mount Gambier, May 4, Evening.
The Circuit Court was opened to-day by Mr. Justice Stow. The first case heard was that against Frederick Barrein and John Gottlieb Barrein, his son, who were charged with stealing a large quantity of goods from the wreck of the Geltwood on June 23, 1876. The prisoners pleaded not guilty, and were defended by Messrs. Davison and Grundy. The Crown Solicitor conducted the case for the Crown Jacob Fischer, a labourer, said that he lived between Lake Bonney and Cunanda Station on June 14, when a great storm occurred. Six or seven days after he went to the beach, and saw a quantity of wreckage. William Barrein was there. Next day he saw the prisoners on the beach, and both witness and prisoners began burying goods behind the hummocks. They were three days doing this, and then prisoners commenced carting goods home. The wagon that conveyed them belonged to the elder prisoner, and the younger drove it. They removed four loads altogether. Witness saw no sign of the wrecked vessel until three days after he found the wreckage, and then he noticed two short spars some distance out at sea. They were pointed out to him by Frederick Barrein. There were several other men on the beach a few days afterwards, and eight or nine including witness and prisoners. Rolled one of the ship's boats that had not been much broken high upon the hummocks, beyond the reach of the water. Witness remained on the beach till July 5, when the body was found, and the wreck was reported to the police. No arrangement was made between witness and prisoners that the goods were to be divided, nor were prisoners working for witness. Witness admitted having once told Inspector Hunt that the Barreins had not been to the beach, and said he did so at the request of Frederick and William Barrein. Carl Rahtz, a kangaroo hunter, said that on June 14 he lived in a tent near Cunanda. On the morning of June 23 he saw the elder prisoner come barefooted over the boggy ground from the direction of the hummocks with a bag of something on his shoulder. He took it home on the 4th July. He saw the younger prisoner driving a German wagon containing tobacco from the direction of the craft. He said he got it from Fischer, who took it out of the sea. Prisoner brought the wagon back that way next day empty, and, despite the warnings of witness, drove towards the beach. Witness on July 6 visited the elder prisoner at his house near Millicent, and saw inside boxes, brushes, and other goods, which were not there before. Fischer subsequently offered witness £200 if he would say nothing about the affair, but he refused the bribe. Louis Spehr, a prisoner in the Mount Gambier Gaol, previously convicted for robbing the wreck, stated that when the elder Barrein was lying with him in the lock-up at Millicent on July 9, after the first arrest, he told witness he had found the goods in the hummocks; that he had seen twelve men with horses, bullocks, and drays, working on the beach removing goods, and that six men rolled the boat up on the hummocks. He denied knowing any of the other men. Police-trooper Shiels, of Millicent, said the wreck was reported by James Sparks on July 5. He arrested the elder prisoner the second time at his house on October 23. He denied all knowledge of the offence with which he was charged. Witness and troopers Morris and Mack afterwards searched the premises of prisoner and found buried in the cowyard nearly twenty hundredweight of goods, comprising large quantities of shirting, ornaments, stockings, sheeting, teaspoons, pencils, brushes, tobacco, &c. Prisoner, when brought to the spot, trembled greatly, grew pale, and in answer to the remark of witness said "Yes, Mr. Shiels, I brought one load from the beach, and I am very sorry for it.' Trooper Dowdy said he arrested the younger prisoner at Woakwyne on October 24. He said he knew nothing of the affair. At the conclusion of the case for the Crown, Mr. Davison called several residents near Millicent, who gave prisoner a good character. Counsel having addressed the Court, and the Judge having summed up the evidence, the Jury, after half-an-hour's absence, found prisoners guilty, but recommended them to mercy. They were remanded for sentence. The Court then adjourned until next morning, when the other Geltwood prisoners will be tried.

Register, 17 May 1877
At the Mount Gambier Circuit Court, held on May 4 and 5, several prisoners were tried on charges of stealing goods from the wreck of the Geltwood. A man named Barrein and his son were convicted. Thomas Chute Ellis, a wealthy squatter, and five other men, most of whom were his servants, were also indicted; and although the evidence against them was exceedingly clear, they were acquitted amidst manifestations of popular approval. Mr. Justice Stow strongly condemned the action of the jury, and their conduct has generally been severely reprobated. The Barreins were sentenced to two and a half years' imprisonment with hard labour.

THE GELTWOOD WRECKAGE CASE.
The trials of prisoners accused of the illegal removal of goods from the Geltwood, a vessel wrecked off the coast of Rivoli Bay in July of last year, took place at the Mount Gambier Sessions held during. the first week of May. The prisoners first placed at the bar were Frederick Barrein and his son Gottlieb Barrein. The elder Barrein had been previously fined for the unlawful possession of goods from the wreeked vessel. The chief evidence against the accused was that of a man named Fisher, who deposed to having seen the Barreins engaged in removing goods from the beach. Both prisoner were found guilty. The trial of the other prisoners, T. C. Ellis and his servants Sparks, Meyer, Kerr, Lamond, and Cameron, for a similar offence, was then begun. This case excited much attention on account of the position in life of one of the accused, Ellis, who is a squatter, possessed of considerable property. The evidence against Ellis and his servants was much the same as that against the Barriens, several witnesses swearing to having seen Ellis's men engaged in removing goods from the beach under his directions. The trial resulted in a verdict of not guilty in favour of all the prisoners. The Barreins were sentenced to imprisonment with hard labour for two years and six months. The Judge, Mr. Justice Stow in passing sentence, animadverted in strong terms on the conduct of the Jury in the case of Ellis and the other accused, characterizing the result of the trial as a failure of justice, reflecting seriously upon the manner in which justice is administered in that part ot the colony. Ellis, Sparks, Meyer, Lamond, and Kerr were subsequently charged before the Stipendiary Magistrate with a breach of the Customs laws, by being concerned in tbe removal from the Geltwood of goods which had not paid duty. The evidence was substantially the same as that given at their previous trial. The Magistrate considered the case proved, and sentenced Ellis to pay a fine of £100, and each of the others to pay a fine of £50; he also condemned Ellis in costs.
