Their first three sons were born at Firmley in Surrey, England. The following three children were born at Egham with the following three being born in Adelaide, South Australia.

The Hooghly was built in 1819 at London for Buckle & Company who still owned her when she sailed to South Australia in 1839. It was of 466 tons burden and would have been about 36 metres long and 9 metres wide.

The 1839 sailing was not the first to Australia nor the last. It had transported convicts to Port Jackson on five occasions from 1825 to 1834. On the 20th February 1839 the captain was George Bayly, and on board there were 293 passengers, 290 of these were steerage class passengers whose fares were paid for by the Colonisation Commissioners. Amongst those listed were William Remnant & Mary Ann Townsend.

General Notes: Richard Silver Townsend was born at Frimley in Surrey, England on Thursday the 22nd March 1832 the son of William Remnant & Mary Ann Townsend, and he emigrated to South Australia with his parents in the ship Hooghly, when he was only seven years old. His youngest brother Lionel passed away during that voyage.

It is written that at the age of 12 he left home and lived with the Aboriginals at Sturt for three months. He then went to Oakbank and worked for a Mr. Johnstone tending cattle and sheep. Unfortunately he was unlucky enough to loose some in the scrub. After a thrashing from his father he bolted from home and obtained a job as a billposter, with a Mr. Deering, who had opened the first theatre.

When the theatre closed down he found work at Mitcham with Mrs. John MacLaren, the wife of the Surveyor-General. At this time he was aged 13 years. During the 18 months he was employed by Mrs. MacLaren he was taught to read and write. After the MacLarens' returned to England he worked at well-sinking and stump clearing in Hindley Street, Adelaide. This employment did not last long, as he found work as a comic singer and lamp cleaner in a theatre and later as a barman in the Exchange Hotel in Hindley Street, where he remained for several years. He then left and spent six months at a boiling down works for tallow, at Mr. Younghusband's, Senior of Crystal Brook. Returning to Adelaide he worked for four years as a bricklayer's labourer at Higher Coomb.

While working at Higher Coomb he married Martha Rogers, who had arrived in the Colony in 1849 on the barque, "Branken Moor". They were married on Monday the l4th April, 1851 at St. John's Church, Halifax Street, Adelaide, which he apparently attended as a child. His father and sister Emily, were signatories as witnesses at his wedding. Shortly after the wedding he provided his wife with a wash tub to earn a living from and he joined the flood of people from South Australia to the Victorian Goldfields in 1851. He went to the Forest Creek diggings near Castlemaine but, like most of the others, he failed to make an easy fortune so he returned to his wife.

Since the South Australian gold escort left from the Forest Creek diggings for Adelaide, it is likely that Richard sent his wife some gold to supplement her earnings derived from washing clothes. On his return he obtained work as a sawyer with a George Ashton at Mount Torrens.

It was while working for two years as a barman at the Mount Torrens Hotel for a Mr. Peters, who was licensee from 1853 to 1854, that he saw the erection of the flour mill, (at a cost of £3,400), and soon after found work there as a labourer, working for 5/- a day.

The Licences changed for the hotel seven times until R. Townsend was listed as 1871-72.It is interesting to note that the Mount Torrens Hotel was also known as "Cornish Arms"and "Mt. Torrens Inn"

The Flour Mill at Mount Torrens

Richard rose from labourer, to fireman, to the management of the mill under Benjamin Walker. He subsequently became lessee for three years of the flour-mill and eventually purchased it in 1880.

Two years later he leased it to his sons, Dick and John, as his sight was failing, partly because of a boiler explosion at the mill some time previously. Following that explosion, his rescuers covered him in the froth and scum from the boiler
and it is reported that he suffered no scars.

He later sold the mill to his son Dick and went into retirement. In 1884 Dick put in rollers and inaugurated the manufacture of the "Imperial" brand of roller flour, with which a very large local trade was carried on. Dick ran the mill until
his death in 1927, when it was sold to AMSCOL and became a cheese and butter factory.

Richard was made a Justice of the Peace in 1908 and served on the Bench at Mount Torrens. He became one of the best known personalities of the town in his house, "Royston Cottage". He also owned "Townsend House" at the southern end of the Mill Property although it is understood that he never lived in it. Interestingly enough both had broom handle fences.

He was a member of the Order of Oddfellows and Foresters for forty and thirty-six years respectively, and was also connected with the Church of England for a lengthy period, having held office as a church-warden.

In 1919 with the birth of Marjory Murfitt there were five generations alive at the same time. He was then 87 years old, and he was to live to have a total of five great-great-grand-children.

One of the humorous stories that was handed down about Richard, was the one about a man coming to him during the depression of the late 1890's, looking for work. Richard sent him up to the Public Cemetery to dig his grave. He later had it
bricked in so it wouldn't collapse. He also had the coffins made although they were given away prior to his death. The grave was not required for another 20 years. In 1999 with the collapse of part of the slate cover, the red bricks could
been seen, which proved the verbal history.

It is said that his niece, Margaret Townsend, saw it before World War I and there was a healthy eucalyptus sapling growing in it.

Richard died on Saturday l7th April, 1926 at the age of 94 years, having survived his wife by 20 years. He had 10 children, 8 of whom reached maturity and married.

He had 32 grandchildren, 4 of whom were killed in World War I.

On his death, Richard left his estate to be equally divided between his sons and daughters or their children. The estate was valued at just under £3,000 which was rather a large sum for those days.

The main street of Mount Torrens was named Townsend Street, after perhaps the town's most colourful figure, Richard Townsend whose home happened to be in that street.

Records show that the Townsend family played an important part in the life of Mount Torrens. Alfred and brother Richard ran the Carpenters and Wheelwrights Shop while Dick and John were in the flour mill. John later dropped out of that partnership and became the local tailor.

Dick's daughters also made confectionery in Marlow Cottage. Richard also drove the hawkers van to Adelaide and return for the Sinkinson Family who ran the local store.

Richard Silver Townsend served on the Mount Pleasant Board of Advice when in 1880 it took control of the Mt. Torrens Primary School.

The families were also involved with the Bible Christian Church and the Church of England.

In 1908 Richard, almost blind wrote his last letter to his youngest son Richard Townsend at Crystal Brook.

Flt-Lt. V. E. Townsend, who has been awarded the DFC, is the only son of Mr. & Mrs. R.J.B. Townsend of 89 Castle Street, Parkside. He joined the RAAF with the first air trainees in April 1940, and was at Parafield , Point Cook, and Rathmines.

was recently married. Mr. R J B Townsend is the former footballer and cricketer.

Take as a final, young Flt-Lt V E Townsend, of the wide brown eyes; "Towney" in the mess. With instruments awry and plane shot up, he got out of Tulagi to fly 1,800 miles home. He has bombed Rabaul from 800 ft.; he was out for 22 hours 35
minutes non-stop searching for the Canberra before it was known she was lost. He has 1,600 hours in his operational log book. And the other night over Kahili he turned on his navigation lights.
Why? asked the IO

"Well" said Towney "the Japs were holding back on their search lights, so I did it to encourage them"

He did that several times at either end of the strip. The Japs. picked him up all right.
And as they did, other Cats slipped in to do their bombing.

Alf, like his father and brother Dick, was also involved with the flour milling industry. He served his apprenticeship to the milling trade under his father who owned the Mt. Torrens Mill

Abandoning the milling industry, he apprenticed himself to the wheelwright and carpentering trade and afterwards turned his attention in other directions, serving eleven years in various trades. He made himself conversant with machinery of various kinds, including milling appliances and mining machinery and supervised the erection of the Arltunga Government Cyanide Works at a later date, prior to which he established a wheelwright & carpentering business at Mount Torrens, and carried it on in conjunction with his brother for six years

Mr. Alf Townsend's Flourmill, Mt. Pleasant, SA

The Totness Roller Flourmills, Mount Pleasant was owned by Alf Townsend who made the purchase from Mr. Henry Giles.

It was remodeled from a stone mill by Alf when he took possession in 1900, and brought it under the Cornelius International System, since which time the annual output had been about 3,500 bags of flour, the plant being capable of turning out
fifty five (5 bushels) bags in twenty four hours.

The original steam flour mill was built by Henry Giles in 1862 when the wheat industry was flourishing, but unfortunately it only operated for a few years. This was due to a disease which destroyed the crops.

It is reported that the mill burnt down on a Saturday in September 1923 and by 1951 the remaining chimney was declared unsafe and was demolished.

The Wesleyan Church was built in 1867 being the first church to be erected in Mt Pleasant. It remained a church for only seven years at which time it was purchased as an Institute in 1874. Henry Giles donated two blocks of land either side which became the Show Grounds. In 1978 the property was sold and sub-divided. The Institute building was converted to a residence and named 'Townsend House' in recognition of Alf Townsend. Interestingly enough it is situated on Showground Road.

Alf was closely associated with the progress of the Mt. Pleasant Institute and was the President. He inaugurated the movement for lighting the street of the township with acetylene gas, and was instrumental in having the institute enlarged, and a skating rink built, being generally recognised as the prime mover in all matters relating to the improvement of the place.

Alf was also a keen musician and became the secretary of the re-formed Mt Pleasant Town Band in 1907.

A medal was presented to him by the Mount Pleasant Institute, dated 5th Nov 1904.

This medal was inherited by nephew Louis Townsend and then to Joy Crosby, a great niece.

Alf. Townsend Circa 1907

It was with interest that I read of Alf's outstanding contributions to the town of Mount Pleasant and so I quote:-

"The skating fever is still raging here and on several nights in the week, the Institute hall resounds with the whirl of the skates, relieved by a loud bumping noise and sounds of laughter.

Neither Institute Committee nor the South Rhine District Council had to lift a financial finger. Alfred Townsend netted all the funds needed to complete the Institute renovations, and also convert the existing main street oil lamps to acetylene gas globes pouring out fifty candle power each. At the same time, the Institute, the two hotels and various businesses also installed acetylene gas facilities intended to take advantage of the unheard-of brightness. With the eventual capacity to keep something like one hundred flames alight, feeder pipes came underground from one of Charles Trescowthick's Globe generators nestling protectively beside the Institute's sturdy stone buttresses, with the Institute Committee itself responsible for keeping the gas supply in order. On 23 June 1905, gas jets flickered into action, 'without a penny being raised by the townspeople'. Subsequently, the Townsend's organised a further series of skating competitions in the Springton hall to pay for renovations there, whereupon the South Rhine District Council felt wealthy enough to pay for a brand new sign over the refurbished front door.

Sadly, Alfred Townsend's fine community record did not brush off onto the district after he left for Pinnaroo in 1908. Understandably. the Mount Pleasant Institute handed over responsibility for the township's acetylene lighting system to the South Rhine Council in 1911-it was not the job of a voluntary cultural organisation to supervise municipal illumination. Council would not, or could not, operate the business properly, and after the generator finally 'gave up the ghost' in June 1916, the whole visionary affair fell into disuse. Just before the new Totness opened its doors during 1918, the South Rhine Council sold the generator, much to Alfred Townsend's dismayed protests, for he had 'kept tabs' on the sorry saga from his office as Clerk of the Pinnaroo District Council. From time to time, the rusting lamp posts in Mount Pleasant's now-unlighted main street became quite a talking point,

Visitors to Mount Pleasant seem to think we are in the dark ages, and it certainly looks like it in the evening, with only a few lights from the windows to guide those who walk abroad after sunset...

…which only the coming of electric light in 1927 put to rights."

Alf married Mary Ann MULLINS in St John's Church, Mt Pleasant in 1885. she was the daughter of Mr. P. Mullins of Mt. Torrens. They ventured to Lameroo, and it was there that he once again made his mark, in the district.

On 22nd Nov 1907 a meeting held in the Settlers Hotel Lameroo to form a vigilance committee and Alf was elected. In January 1909 Alf announced that he would undertake building work as he had secured an efficient team of carpenters.

The Smithville Hall contract was let to Alf and the Von Doussa Hall and School were erected by him in 1909 at a cost of £100.

Albert Henry Townsend a son opened a hairdresser and tobacconist shop in Railway Tce between the hours of 7p.m. - 11p.m.

Alf Townsend was instrumental in having the Bews Siding extended to hold 15 railway trucks for the purpose of handling grain. Both Alf and his son Percy Townsend were grain buyers in the first season (1909/10)

Alf bought wheat at Lameroo, Bews and Yaparra. Among other agencies he held was the stock firm Bagot, Shakes & Lewis. He sold timber from his yard next to the Institute on Railway Terrace.

Alf's Lameroo Home, Wood & Iron Yard

He was the District Clerk from the beginning of Local government in the area until the end of 1918.

Alf was one of the first Justices of the Peace appointed in September 1908.

He was successful in tendering for the erection of the Lameroo Institute Hall, a timber framed and iron construction which was lined inside with small fluted iron and completed in July 1909.

Alf was secretary of the hospital and arranged for farmers of the district to donate 1,250 bags of wheat towards the building fund together with a Government grant of £400. He drew up the plans for the building at no cost to the hospital. The
Hospital at Lameroo had a ward which was named after him. This has since been demolished. The building was opened by the Chief Secretary Mr. A W Styles on 7th June 1917.

The Council opened tenders for the position of Clerk, with 13 being received throughout the state. Alf's tender was accepted. His front room was used by the Council for meetings, as Alf was the first Town Clerk. He finally resigned as Clerk and Overseer on 14th Nov 1918

He was instrumental in deputising the Government and the Railways for many things, amongst which was the erection of platforms etc. at the Lameroo Railway Station.

Alf was presented with a medal from the I. O.O.F. Lodge dated 10th March 1915.

This medal was inherited by Louis Townsend.

This Certificate of Sympathy was presented to Alf at the passing of his devoted wife in 1916.

Alf was closely associated with is younger brother Richard, who had ventured to Lameroo to assist with the building of new homes in the town. Richard's first tools were purchased from Harris Scarfe on the account of his brother Alf Townsend of Mount Torrens.

Bertha was unable to care for him and it is understood she administered wine to him on a regular basis. While Louis Townsend was visiting his uncle at Brighton he begged him to be admitted to a Nursing Home. So he was placed in a home off Cross Roads one street above the Hawthorn Railway Crossing. It was there that he died and was laid to rest in the Church of England Cemetery at Brighton. Mrs. Payne from Glenelg and Louis were the only two at the funeral.

Bertha was taken out of the nursing home by her sisters to a farm in the Eudunda / Kapunda area and cared for.

The Rocking Chair in Louis' Home came from the estate. A sister in-law of Bertha, a Mrs. Payne of Hahndorf, handed back a Snuff Box to Richard (Bruce) Townsend at the ANZ Bank Ltd. at Hahndorf in about 1966. Given to Richard Silver Townsend, by his father and is expected to be continually handed down to a Richard Townsend..

He married in 1885, Mary Ann MULLINS, daughter of Mr.

Alf was secretary of he hospital and arranged for farmers of the district to donate1,250 bags of wheat towards the building fund together with a Government grant of £400. he drew up the plans for the building at no cost to the hospital. The Hospital at Lameroo had a ward was named after him.

Lameroo Railway Yard

Alf was involved with the lodge and was presented with a medal from the I. O.O.F. Lodge dated 10th March 1915. This was later given to Louis Townsend.]

This Certificate of Sympathy was presented to Alf at the passing of his devoted wife in 1916.

He was closely associated with is younger brother Richard, who had ventured to Lameroo to assist with the building of new homes in the town. Richard's first tools were purchased from Harris Scarfe on the account of his brother Alf Townsend of Mount Torrens.

with Alf Townsend 4th from the Left.

His second marriage was however to the Matron, Bertha Payne.

They removed to Virginia S.A. where he owned the only shop and petrol station in town.. Alf also had a bowling rink on his property. Beatrice his daughter suffered a convulsion while his brother Richard was there. He was sent in the Model T Ford to Salisbury to get the doctor. Alf called to the housekeeper, "Miss Chamber bring the chamber". Beatrice died there.

Alf and Bertha removed again, this time to No.1 Methuen Street, Fitzroy, [Prospect] on 10/4/1932 to retire. Their next move was to Brighton, to No.4 Yarmouth Street on 24/5/42. Alf was very involved in community affairs and also the Odd Fellows Lodge. He too was almost blind, possibly from cataracts. It was suggested that the milling industry may be the cause of this. It was there that he died aged 91 years 110 days, and was laid to rest in the Church of England Cemetery at Brighton. Mrs. Payne from Glenelg and Louis were the only two at the funeral.

Bertha was taken out of the nursing home by her sisters to a farm in the Eudunda / Kapunda area and cared for.

In about 1889 Richard drove a horse-drawn Hawkers Van from Mount Torrens, to the Hotel at the East End of Rundle Street, Adelaide. This was done for Mr. Sinkinson the local grocer. He would collect eggs and butter from farm houses on his way down past the Eagle on the Hill Hotel and he returned with the groceries.

He told stories of the live eagle, which was in a large cage next to the hotel.
He also worked at his fathers Flourmill.

In approx. 1898 he was working at a dairy on Unley Road, possibly one he passed in the Hawker Van. It was there that he had his tools of trade delivered to commence work with his brother Alf in the Wheelwright & Carpentry business.

Tools were purchased from Geo. P. Harris Scarfe & Co., Gawler Place, Adelaide on 24th Sept. 1898. A Disstons Marking Gauge cost 3d. Clyde Townsend, his Grandson, still has some of these tools in 1999. These tools were delivered to Unley Road & Fisher Street where Richard was working in a dairy.

Richard roofed the Methodist Church at Mt. Torrens. It is reported that he assisted with the building of a Reaper at Ucolta near to Peterborough.

In 1900 he moved to Crystal Brook where he managed the Steam-driven Flour-Mill for his brother Dick Townsend of Mount Torrens. This mill was opposite the railway line on the northern side and a line was rented from the mill to the station yard. The Mill was burnt to the ground in 1905 and it was never rebuilt.

Richard attended church at Crystal Brook, which is where he would have met the Hamlyns. He married Emily Hamlyn in the Methodist Church Crystal Brook on Wednesday the 3rd Dec. 1902.

Their first home was on the north side of the Crystal Brook Creek. They moved to Main Street opposite the Engineering and Water Supply.

Richard ventured to Lameroo around 1915, to construct houses as his brother Alf was there working. He also completed the timber work on his brother-in-law, Arthur Forder's house at Laura. He worked as a carpenter for Ned Whitehead and made coffins for Mr. Estick the undertaker at Crystal Brook.

Richard worked for the District Council of Crystal Brook as Clerk and Overseer of Works for seven years until August of 1925. It is understood that he was asked to retire from the position, as he held no qualifications and union pressure was being applied to the council. It was at this time that Richard applied for a position on the Mt. Barker Council. He had many references to submit, some have been produced on the following pages.

He was then employed by the Waterworks Department as a carpenter and was kept on in meter repairs until he retired in 1938.

He worked part time as caretaker of the Institute for many years.

Richard was also the secretary of the Crystal Brook Lodge from 1915 and was presented with a writing bureau with a lead light door. He was secretary of the Bowling Club of Crystal Brook and secretary of the Tennis Club for ten years.

On Wednesday night, after Choir Practice on the 25th November 1936 he married Pirie Elizabeth Slater in the Crystal Brook Methodist Church.

They built a home in Brandis Street, Crystal Brook, together with the assistance of his father and his brother-in-law, Len Slater who was constructing a home at the same time, two doors away. In 1937 Louis joined the S. A. Railways where he worked as a carpenter in the Peterborough Division. He also worked for the S.A. Wheat Board mouse proofing and roofing the 'wheat stacks'.

On 26th January 1938 at Crystal Brook, Pirie gave birth to their first child. He was named Richard Bruce after each of his grandfathers. They lived at the Brook until Bruce commenced school. Louis had taken up employment with the B.H.P. at Whyalla as a carpenter on 17th October 1940.

Louis was one of the early arrivals at Whyalla, and lived in a tent on the beach until cubicles were built near the Town Workshop for the single living men.

During, and following the war years Louis was involved in the issuing of Ration Tickets for such things as Petrol, Clothing, Tea and Butter. This was a Commonwealth System that made it possible for every person to have an even share of available commodities.

Pirie gave birth at Whyalla to another son and a daughter, Clyde and Joy.

While living in a Housing Trust House at 40 Goodman Street, Louis purchased his first car. It was a four seater, Flying Standard Tourer, green in colour. It had two doors which opened from the front and a canvas hood which was rarely folded down. Bruce was in later years allowed to was it regularly and clean the spark plugs.

Unused Ration Tickets

Louis was very involved in his community, being secretary of the Carpenters & Joiners Union, Returning Officer for State & Federal Elections for many years, Honorary Member of the Hospital Board for 10 Years, served on the Whyalla Town Commission, was Sunday School Superintendent for fifteen years and Local Preacher in excess of sixty years.

Pirie with Louis receiving a certificate
for 50 years as a Local Preacher.

Louis progressed within the shipyard to become the timber inspector and at that time was transferred to the Whyalla Hospital to run the newly formed Medical Scheme. He served on the staff for a period of 13 years from 1953 to 1966, when he was presented with a wrist-watch. From there he worked as the accountant for Richard's Bakery at Essington Lewis Avenue, Whyalla. Finally back to the B.H.P. Credit Union, as Loans Manager until his retirement.

Both he and Pirie continued their involvement in the Uniting Church. Louis spent his spare time in the garage on the woodworking machinery making 'Click Clacks' for sale to 'Jig Saw' a Melbourne based toy company. He stopped when he had made 22,000. The proceeds paid for the reroofing of St. Andrews Church & the cost of a new electronic church organ for Peters St. Uniting Church both at Whyalla.

In his mid eighties he is still active and drives his Nissan Pulsar long distances, without concern although he now makes regular stops.

Following Pirie's death, Louis again put his heart and soul back into working for the Church after he felt a calling from his Lord. He conducts weekday services at the various Nursing Homes and the Hospital in Whyalla. This is in addition to
his preaching commitments at Whyalla and Iron Knob.

On 14th February 1999 he preached at Peters Street Uniting Church, Whyalla at a Special Church Service commemorating his 60 years of Lay Preaching.

At age ninety Louis visited the Mount Torrens Primary School with son Bruce on 25th September 2002 to present a framed color copy of the Certificate of Merit presented to his father in 1886. He spoke to the students of the early days in Mt Torrens.

January 2003 Louis went to Melbourne with hs son Clyde after spending Christmas with all his family in the Gawler area. He experienced problems keeping his food down and so was admitted to hospital where a 90% blockage was discovered. 16th January a "Stint " was inserted into the oesophagus to allow food to pass. On his return to Whyalla he made the decission to spend the remainder of his life in his own home until hospital was the last resort.

Bruce and Joy took turns in caring for him from April until he was admitted to hospital on 16th June. He died peacefully on Friday 20th June 2003 just 50 days short of his mother's age. He was laid to rest with Pirie on 24th June after a
great Thanks Giving Service at Peters Street Uniting Church which was full to overflowing.

7-Richard Bruce Townsend was born on 26 Jan 1938 in Crystal Brook, South Australia, Australia.

General Notes:
Bruce was born at Crystal Brook Hospital and grew up near his Grandparents' Townsend and Slater until 1943, his first year at Primary School. At the close of that school year Bruce and his Mother moved to Whyalla where his father was working.

He spent many holidays with his cousins on the Kelly Farm which was on the Redhill Road, out from Crystal Brook. It was there he collected bones and paper for the School Patriotic Fund (SPF) Funds raised were used to purchase good for the soldiers at war.

He attended the Whyalla Town School for a short while until the Whyalla South School was built. It was there that he received his Progress Certificate.

Bruce at 2 years 9½ months

He finished school at the Whyalla Technical High at Leaving Standard (4th year).

As a youth he was a member of 1st Whyalla Troop of Boy Scouts Association; as a Senior Queen Scout he was invited to open the door of the Royal Car for Queen Elizabeth 2nd & Duke of Edinburgh on their visit to Whyalla in 1952. As a scout he won bicycle trials for courtesy. Sport was not important to him, as he was ever watchful of things happening around him, with a special interest in wood.

While still at school he worked on Saturday mornings, filling turps and kerosene bottles for Clarksons.

He Joined the ANZ Bank Ltd. in 1955 at Whyalla, relieved at Port Pirie and Wirrabara & was soon transferred to Alice Springs, NT for over two years. There he hand wrote the ledgers while the manager used a hand operated machine to print the statements. It was there he met Nancy Horsted who was holidaying with her Aunt Dorothy from Colac.

After 10 months of weekly letters they once again met and Nancy moved to Adelaide to live and find employment. They later announced their engagement.

The first car Bruce purchased was a 1932 Triumph Tourer, single seater.

It was dark grey until Bruce painted it light grey with red and white flashes. It had a leather fan belt and no water-pump. The differential had a brass crown wheel which was stripped going up Mount Osmond, but luckily was replaceable.

Nancy Horsted

The following year they married in Colac 14/5/1960. They lived at Glandore where both Richard and Garry started their lives. They all attended the Maughan Methodist Church where Bruce sang in the choir. The family car was then a 1955 Austin A30 into which they all squeezed.

Pamela was born while at Mt. Barker & Trevor at Renmark. Bruce was involved with the church the camera club and the local kindergarten, where he held various positions at both Mt. Barker and Renmark.. Bruce was transferred to Pt. Pirie as Branch Accountant. Still on community committees he joined the Theatre Guild , Pt. Pirie Coral Group, & Jaycees. The family was involved with tennis, school, kindie & the Congregational Church. Bruce was knocked off his moped on the way to work, suffering damage to his left eye sight. He appeared in the TV Series "Bonnie" playing the role of the minister of religion, alongside Googie Withers. This was filmed at Gulnare, SA. He co-ordinated and helped to build the JC Train which he spray painted red with the vacuum cleaner.

A transfer to Gawler allowed them to buy their first house. Still involved with school council, church choir, he became the Inaugural President of Barossa Valley Jaycees and in the same year commenced Gawler Jaycees. Jaycee is a young peoples organisation for self development, certainly involved the whole family in many ways especially while Bruce was the Eastern Regional President. He received the highest honour when awarded a Senatorship of JCI. His number was 26,206. Refusing to transfer from Gawler because of his commitment to his family the bank did not look upon his promotion favourably. He served in Bankcard Dept. as supervisor of customer service & instrumented training, then served on relieving staff until transfer to Northern Administration, Losses, Frauds & Forgeries. While there he was injured as a passenger in a Motor Vehicle Accident in April 1988.

He became the Inaugural President of Gawler Kiwanis Club in 1988 being involved in the community. He purchased many Pianolas and restored more than forty. This along with tuning was to be part of his retirement program, cabinet making the other, but the injuries put paid to that full time ambition.
