Comment "Son of John McFARLANE and Susan MCFADYEN. Died in Bright, Victoria, Australia. Note: Age at death as given on gravestone is incorrect. John Orde McFarlane's place of birth has been variously recorded as having been at Glassary and Ardrishaig. In the 1981 census he gives his place a birth as the Parish of Kilmichael. There is a village called Kilmichael Glassary. This might have been the source of the birthplace of Glassary. Captain John McFarlane was issued with his Second Mate certificate in Glasgow on 17 September 1860. He was granted a Master's certficate for a Foreign Going Vessel on 2nd April 1873 in Sydney where his address was given as 5 New Pitt Street. The certificate is No. 200 and gives as his qualifications ""8 years previous experience as Master in Foreign Going Trade"". He was engaged in trade in the South Seas - probably using his ship, SSAustralia. Three years later he was back in Scotland on the farm ""Ardchonnel"" where he married Margaret. His occupation on James' birth certificate in 1881 is given as ""farmer"" with Ardchonnel as his usual place of residence. On his return to Australia he sold the SS Australia and in 1889 rebuilt the Alpine Hotel at Bright. The Alpine was a weathboard building which had been removed from Wandiligong. He became a very popular host at the Alpine and a significant figure in the Bright community. He made a number of investments in gold mines in the district, one of which proved to be very successful.
