Daughter of James MCLACHLAN and Jannet BROWN. Born in Dalavich, Argyll, Scotland and died in Canterbury, Victoria, Australia. Note: Margaret's birth certificate lists her birth place as a farm known as "Ardchonnel", Mill of Avich. Ardchonnel is on the opposite shore of Loch Awe, directly across from Dalavich. "Ardchonnel, Dalavich" is given as the place of birth and "Mill of Avich" as the place of registration in 1881 of her first-born, James McFarlane. This was just before the family emigrated to Australia. Two years before Margaret's birth - at the time of the 1851 census - her parents were living at the farm of Sonachan which is on Loch Awe opposite Kilchrenan and only a few miles along the road east from Ardchonnel. The 1881 census lists Margaret and her husband John as the farmers at Ardchonnel, and her widowed mother as the inn keeper at Portinisherrick, just down the road from the farm. Margaret married John on the 8th. of December, 1876, in Glasgow, Scotland. On her gravestone, Margaret's age is given as 87 although in reality she was 89. |
